Let’s see if this works.

On my quest to get StatCounter working correctly, the best advice I could find was to make sure that my version of WordPress was in fact the most recent version.  As you could probably guess, mine was not.

I initially built this website and my two other WordPress ones at the same time and used the same version of WordPress, which at that time was 2.6.3.  I had received notices about upgrading to version 2.7 for a while now, but when looking at the documentation to do so it looked more complicated than it was.  Rather than risking losing my websites during the upgrading process, I just didn’t upgrade.

After reading the forums it looked like updating was my only answer, so that’s what I just finished doing.  After making detailed back-ups of all three of those websites and making sure everything else important was recorded, I went through the updating process.  It took a little while because of my elaborate back-up method, but it looks like my websites are up and running once again.  I’m going to let everything sit overnight and see if StatCounter has logged anything by tomorrow.  If so, then great.  If not, then the quest to make it work will continue.

One of my other theories for it not working correctly is that most of the traffic could be people reading the articles from the news feed.  I saw somebody mention that problem in the forum, so it may very well be true.  I’ve received a few e-mails with fans of my sites telling me how much they like the articles and how they’ve added the feed to their home Google page.  Those people also found my websites some how, and that’s one of the main reasons why I want to get StatCounter working.

On the plus side I’ve now got the latest version of the WordPress software which is a good thing in theory.  I learned a big lesson about keeping software updated a few months ago which caused me a lot of headaches and the re-uploading of a bunch of software and files.  Needless to say, I should have updated my WordPress software as soon as the latest version was released.  Those updates are made for a reason.

In addition to getting StatCounter to work, this may also get Google Analytics to properly monitor my WordPress websites, too.  If not, then I’ll look into that problem in the future.  I’ve got more important tasks for my Florida Project and Intruder Prevention websites that I’d rather complete first.  After all, I need more content to help attract more daily visitors to my websites.  Monitoring where they come from and what they view on the websites is a luxury item that I can live without for now.  Knowing about the visitors is more important to fine tuning the sites and seeing where to focus the future plans.

Another plus is that while doing the backing up of files and uploading of new files, I was finally able to start watching the first season of Stargate SG1.  I was a huge fan of Stargate the movie but never got into the series since (if I remember correctly) it premiered on one of the movie channels many years ago.  After watching episode 1 of season 1, I could see why.  There’s a critical scene that would definitely have been censored from the networks.  I’ve been trying to get into TV shows like that for a while now.  I just started watching the first season of 24, too.  Seeing it now, I find it hard to believe that I didn’t try to watch it before.  Then again, that’s probably because I’m one who doesn’t usually go along with fads.  If there’s a popular TV show I’m more likely not to watch it simply because everybody else likes it and raves about it.  I don’t know why, but that’s just how I do things.

Anyway, it’s quite late and I’ve got one more back-up to download to my hard drive before I call it a night.  This certainly wasn’t the best way to spend a Saturday night, but hopefully it’ll make things go better in the long run.
